Financial Education

Financial Literacy Initiative for Immigrants/Refugees (FLII/R)

Financial Literacy Initiative for Immigrants/Refugees is an expansion of Women's Initiative for Self Empowerment's former Financial Education for Immigrant and Girls program. This new initiative is a collaboration with immigrant and refugee nonprofit organization in the Twin Cities to initiate an "Immigrant Wealth Campaign" to encourage immigrant households to build wealth. This program uses "Becoming Part of Wealth in America," a curriculum to teach immigrant families about budgeting and saving, credit management, assets building, consumer protection and financial institutions.

The "Becoming Part of Wealth in America" program was written by Darryl Dahlheimer through a grant from the McKnight Foundation in partnership with Women's Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE) and the Minnesota State Department of Human Services, the Office of Economic Opportunity.

WISE serves as the lead agency in implementing the "Becoming Part of Wealth in America" curriculum, which is covered in 12 hours of workshops.

The curriculum provides culturally and linguistically appropriate, unbiased one-on-one financial counseling and workshops in three primary subject areas: home-buying; saving and investments; and asset protection and insurance.

The program builds the capacity of 10 immigrant organizations serving Southeast Asian and Latino communities to provide Becoming Part of Wealth in America, a financial literacy awareness training, by certifying and coordinating the activities of ten multi-cultural/lingual service provider financial literacy trainers.
