Girls Democracy in Action (GDIA) program enhances the goal of the Girls Getting Ahead Leadership (GGAL) program with the primary goal to support junior and senior high school girls with the skills crucial to understanding government, engaging in the political process and creating political change. This summer program meets twice a week and covers topics such as power, oppression, stereotypes, communities, media literacy, the US political system, international human rights, international relations, immigration, citizenship, voting and women creating social change. The program culminates in students identifying a community issue of concern to them, researching the issue, and developing an action plan describing how they will take steps to impact social change regarding the issue. In summer of 2007, GDIA participants will be visiting the Minnesota State Capitol and sharing their research and action plans with State Senator Mee Moua.
