Project Achieve
Project Achieve is a college preparation and academic enrichment after school program at Higher Ground Academy (HGA), an Afro-centric St. Paul Charter School.
Higher Ground started working Admission Possible (AP) in 2007, a highly successfully program that helps students prepare for the ACT and post-secondary education. AP only accepts about 50% of 11th and 12th graders who show a high potential to succeed in college and have higher GPAs and Basic Standards Test scores.
In response to the need for assistance in college preparation for the students who were denied into the program, WISE, in collaboration with the African American Friendship Association for Cooperation & Development (AAFACD), developed Project Achieve to address the needs of the remaining students who would’ve fallen through the cracks. Project Achieve works with this group of “at-risk” juniors and seniors (both males and females) to develop important assets, provide information about college and career opportunities, and increase organizational skills, time management, and social skills.
09-10 Program Accomplishments:
• 18 students, (ten seniors and eight juniors), were active participants in the program.
• 61 college preparation, academic enrichment, career exploration, and leadership development workshops were completed from September 2009 to June 2010.
• All 10 seniors successfully applied to three or more colleges/universities, submitted their FAFSAs, graduated from high school, and will be attending college.
